Menchov takes down Giro d'Italia 2009. Sean Conroy wins the Fantasy Giro.
Giro d'Italia 2009 finished in Rome with a blast past all of the historic sites of that great city. And the racer who took the spoils of victory was Denis Menchov, who easily fought off a challenge by Danilo Di Luca to record his thrid Grand Tour win. He even had time to fall off and get back on again..!
In the Fantasy Giro, the team known (rather unpolitically) as Doped Up took top honours. Sean Conroy's Irish squad contained the top four overall of Di Luca, Menchov, Pellizotti and Sastre, along with the early agitators Thomas Lovqvist and Edwald Boasson Hagen.
COngratulations to Sean, and thanks to all for playing. Naturally, Velogames will ride on and be back soon with more Fantasy Cycling in 2009!
OVERVIEW
Armstrong and Basso return to Grand Tour action!
Velogames is proud to announce another season of Fantasy Cycling contests, starting with the first Fantasy Grand Tour of the year, Fantasy Giro d'Italia 2009.
The Giro 2009 is one of the most eagerly awaited editions in recent years. After the trailblazing victory by Astana's Alberto Contador in 2008, the same team return for another assault on the Maglia Rosa. This time, they are sure to gain even more publicity, as they have the returning Lance Armstrong within their stable to lead the charge.
But facing off against Lance and Astana will be the Texan's old adversary Ivan Basso. The former Giro winner is returning this season after a two-year doping-related ban and, unsurprisingly, has specifically targeted this race over all others in 2009.
The Giro is by no means only about these two big names. A host of other hungry Italians are also looking for glory in their home roads, while the sprint battles promise to be intense, with young superstar Mark Cavendish going head-to-head with wily professional Alessandro Petacchi.
The Velogames Fantasy Giro will be following all the stars - and their watercarriers - along the three week route.
Entries closed at 1500 CET on Saturday 9th May, just before the first teams rolled off the start ramp to start a visually-spectacular Team Time Trial on the Venice Lido.
I look forward to seeing your team on the road in 2009!
- George Chapman, Owner of Velogames
