Scoring Points

Points are allocated to riders based on their real-life performance in each stage of the race.

Points are awarded in five areas: Stage result, Intermediate Sprints, Summits, Breakaways and Assists.

The points awarded in each scoring area are shown in the sections below.

Stage Result (all stages, except for the Stage 5 team time trial)

The leading 20 riders in each stage, except for the Team Time Trial on Stage 5, score the following points.

Stage Result (Stage 5 team time trial)

Stage 5 is a Team Time Trial and its unique nature means that it follows a custom scoring plan compared to the other stages.

Points are awarded to all team members in the Top 8 teams classified by finishing position in the team time trial, based on the following table. Riders do not have to finish alongside their leading team members to receive points. However, they do have to finish the stage as a classified finisher.

Intermediate Sprint

The leading 5 riders at each nominated intermediate sprint score fantasy points. This scoring category will reward both breakaway riders and also those riders going for a high placing in the Points jersey standings. Points are not awarded on time-trial stages.

Summit - Especial Category Climb

The Special category (HC) climbs are the longest and steepest mountain climbs in the race. The first 8 riders across the summit some well-deserved bonus fantasy points. This points category includes the Cima Alberto Fernandez (which is an additional designation for the highest summit in the race).

Summit - 1st category climb

Points are awarded over each first category climb. The leading 5 riders across the summit of each of these climbs score fantasy points. Points are not awarded on Time Trial stages.

Breakaway Points

Breakaway points are awarded to riders who are in the lead break at 50% distance through the stage. A breakaway is defined as a group of 30 riders or less, with a measurable gap of five seconds to any groups behind them.

Assists - Teammate stage positions

These points are awarded to riders who have a team rider finish in the top 3 of the stage results. Riders must start the stage to score points. These points are not given out for the Individual or Team Time Trial Stages.
